Greek citizens, living abroad, are required to register at the nearest Greek Consular Authority, the major events of family life, such as Births, Deaths and Marriages.
For a vital record (Birth, Death and Marriage Registration) to be drawn up at one of Greece’s Consular Authorities abroad, the event being recorded needs to have occurred in the region of that Consular Authority’s jurisdiction. The Consulate in Brisbane has jurisdiction for all of Queensland.
Please note, that to acquire Greek citizenship, the Registration of Marriage for the parents and Registration of Birth for those seeking Greek citizenship, are required.
Greek citizens interested in registering Births, Deaths and Marriages must appear in person at the Consular Authority. General requirements as to the supporting documents needed by the Consular Authority to draw up a vital record include verification of the identity of the applicant(s) and evidence of the volition of the applicant(s), as well as verification of the identity of the person concerned in the vital record, as follows:
Registration of Birth:-
Registration of a Birth with the Consulate in Brisbane requires that the birth has taken place in Queensland.
The following supporting documents must be submitted when Registering the Birth:-
- Parents’ recent issued (not more than six months old) Certificate of Birth/Registration and Certificate of Family Status from the relevant Municipality in Greece. Should you require assistance in obtaining these certificates, please contact the Consulate, who will obtain them for you.
- Full Birth Certificate from Births, Deaths & Marriage (Level 32, 180 Ann Street, Brisbane)
- If there has been a christening, the Church Baptism Certificate
- The Applicant’s Australian passport
Please note, if the applicant is an adult, he or she must come to the Consulate in person.
In the case where the applicant is under 18 years old, one of the parents will have to complete the registration procedure.
Registration of Marriage:-
Registration of a Marriage with the Consulate in Brisbane requires that the marriage has taken place in Queensland.
The following supporting documents must be submitted when Registering the Marriage:-
- Recently issued (not more than six months old) Certificate of Birth/Registration and Certificate of Family Status from the relevant Municipality in Greece for both the husband and wife (if they are both Greek citizens). Should you require assistance in obtaining these certificates, please contact the Consulate, who will obtain them for you. If only one of them is a Greek citizen, then the non-Greek citizen must provide a full Birth Certificate from Births, Deaths & Marriages.
- Full Marriage Certificate from Births, Deaths & Marriages (Level 32, 180 Ann Street, Brisbane)
- If the marriage was conducted in the Greek Orthodox Church, the Greek Marriage Certificate that was given to the husband and wife after the ceremony. If you don’t have this certificate, a copy can be obtained from the Church where you were married.
- Passports and or Greek I.D. Card for both the husband and wife.
Registration of Death:-
Registration of a Death with the Consulate in Brisbane requires that the death has taken place in Queensland.
The following supporting documents must be submitted when Registering the Death:-
- Recently issued (not more than six months old) Certificate of Birth/Registration and Certificate of Family Status from the relevant Municipality in Greece for both the husband and wife (if they are both Greek citizens). Should you require assistance in obtaining these certificates, please contact the Consulate, who will obtain them for you.
- Full Death Certificate from Births, Deaths & Marriages (Level 32, 180 Ann Street, Brisbane).
- Greek passport of the deceased (if available)
- Greek Identity Card of the deceased (if available)
- Passport or Identity Card of the declarant.
A death registration requires that the relative, funeral home employee or other legally interested party declaring the death appear in person at the Consular Authority.
Consular Fees:-
The consular fees for a Birth, Death or Marriage Registration is €10. The cost for each certified copy is €10. The fees are paid in Australian dollars set on a monthly basis.
